Laitram, L.L.C., is seeking a Central Plant Operator to join the Corporate Facilities Management and Engineering Department at our Hammond campus.  This position will operate and maintain the Central Utility Plant equipment including chillers, cooling towers, compressors and associated equipment, chilled  and process cooling water for injection molding machines, compressed air, and Building Automation System,  This role requires a dedicated individual with proven central plant experience to operate this critical function.

  • Operates, repairs and maintains chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat generating equipment at the Central Plant
  • Start, stop, regulate, monitor and control large centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps and auxiliary equipment.
  • Monitors and reviews all work completed by sub-contractors on the chiller plant equipment and informs management of problems as they are anticipated or develop.
  • Check and adjust related set points to optimize plant performance and reliability. Observe, record, and interpret indications from instrumentation and control systems. Calculate, evaluate, and report findings.
  •  Perform functional testing of and assist in the investigation of problems with plant systems and components. Support plant maintenance and engineering personnel with such efforts.
  •  Collect and test water samples for compliance with water treatment program. Make appropriate adjustments to water treatment equipment.
  • Informs Facility Supervisor, Maintenance Lead and Plastics Production Manager of problems revealed during PM/corrective maintenance process; recommends corrective action, modification and replacements.
  • Coordinates, conducts and documents all fire and life safety measures to include inspections and testing to ensure compliance with policies.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required.
  • Participate in the development, review, and revision of standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain logs, records, and data sheets; prepare reports, time sheets, material requisitions, work orders, and other administrative documents related to plant operation.


  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a chiller plant mechanic including repairing and troubleshooting related equipment with 5 years as a central plant operator  
  • Progressive experience repairing and maintaining centrifugal and absorption chillers, pumps, compressors
  • Current operating engineer license
  • Ability to read flow diagrams, wiring diagrams and schematics
  • In depth knowledge of plant operations and maintenance
  • Proven record of Safety training and knowledge of environmental hazards and regulations
